Singapore Malayalees Kick Off Onam 2026 with a Vallam Kali Dragon Boat Race

Introduction

Onam season in Singapore got off to a splashy start this week. Singapore Kairalee Kala Nilayam kicked off a month of celebrations with a Vallam Kali, the traditional Kerala dragon boat race, drawing a turnout that reflects how far the festival has grown beyond the Malayalee community itself.

A Vallam Kali on Jurong Lake

Over 400 people gathered at Jurong Lake on Sunday for the Vallam Kali, with 11 teams of 10 rowers each taking to the water in Kerala-style dragon boats, bringing an old-age tradition to life on Singapore waters.

Kairalee, which turns 70 this year, is one of the oldest Malayalee cultural groups operating outside India. The community it represents has deep roots in Singapore going back over a century, and today around 40,000 Malayalees call Singapore home.

Behind the scenes, the event took months of planning, from securing the venue and lining up sponsors to coordinating logistics and getting every detail ready for race day. The Kairalee team credited the effort to its volunteers, sponsors and rowers, who put in the hours through practices and on the day itself to pull it off.

A Celebration Open to All

What stood out was who showed up. Alongside Kairalee members were people from other communities across Singapore, all taking part in what was pitched as a shared, hands-on cultural experience rather than a spectator event.

The Kairalee team said the celebrations were designed to feel current rather than nostalgic, with an emphasis on giving children and young people something to actively take part in, not just watch. The broader goal, as described by the organisation, is to use Onam as a bridge between generations and communities, built around cultural exchange rather than a closed celebration.

The Month Ahead

The Vallam Kali is just the opening act. Kairalee’s programme continues right through to India’s Independence Day on 15 August, with pookkalam (floral carpet) displays, music and dance performances, traditional village games, and cultural exhibitions designed to recreate the feel of a Kerala village during Onam.

That build-up leads into the organisation’s flagship event: Kairalee Kampong Onam, taking place at Sembawang Recreation Centre on 15 August. Where the Vallam Kali set the tone, Kampong Onam is the full-day payoff, a mix of competitions, cultural programmes and an Onasadya feast that closes out Kairalee’s contribution to the season. The Kairalee team says they’re carrying the same energy and community spirit from the Vallam Kali straight into this next celebration.

Onam proper follows shortly after. The ten-day festival opens with Atham on 16 August, building up to Thiruvonam, the main day of celebration, on 26 August 2026.
